As Buckingham Township joins communities across the nation in celebrating Independence Day and America's 250th Birthday, we encourage everyone to make safety a part of their holiday traditions. Fireworks are a favorite way to celebrate, but they also pose serious risks when not used properly.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), fireworks were responsible for 15 deaths and an estimated 13,000 injuries nationwide last year. Many of these injuries involved burns to the hands, fingers, face, and head, with young people between the ages of 15 and 24 experiencing the highest injury rates. Even sparklers—often thought of as a safer option for children—can reach temperatures of 2,000°F, hot enough to cause severe burns in just seconds.
Fireworks Safety Reminders
If you choose to use legal consumer fireworks this holiday, remember to:
- Purchase fireworks only from reputable retailers and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Keep children away from fireworks, including sparklers.
- Have a bucket of water or garden hose readily available in case of fire or to soak used fireworks.
- Never attempt to relight a malfunctioning ("dud") firework. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it thoroughly in water before disposing of it.
- Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Light one firework at a time and move away quickly after lighting it.
- Consider attending a professional fireworks display whenever possible for the safest experience.
As we commemorate 250 years of American independence, let's celebrate responsibly so everyone can enjoy a safe and memorable holiday with family, friends, and neighbors.
